ABSTRACT

Thin capillaries were prepared using a method of high-speed stretch of a melted quartz tube 0.5 mm in inner diameter. The rotating tube with thick walls was heated locally using acetylene-oxygen burners [1]. Quartz capillaries were drawn from high-purity quartz tubes (more than 99.99% SiO2) previously treated with 20% fluoric acid to remove the surface layers of tubes enriched by ionic admixtures. After that the tubes were washed with triply distilled water up to neutral reaction. The freshly drawn, up to 5 m long, thin quartz capillary was cut into pieces 10-15 mm in length, which are stored with sealed ends.
