ABSTRACT
Lymphedema is the physical manifestation of inadequate clearance of protein-rich fluid from the interstitial space. This results in a pathologic build-up of both fluid and protein in the extracellular space. The underlying causemay be either a congenitallymalformed lymphatic system (primary lymphedema) or injury to the lymphatic vessels from infection, radiation, surgery, or other trauma (secondary lymphedema).
