ABSTRACT

Resistance to pharmacotherapy is a common occurrence among patients with chronic epilepsy and during prolonged status epilepticus. It is estimated that about one-third of patients with epilepsy will be resistant to pharmacotherapy (1). For patients with the prolonged seizures of status epilepticus, the numbers are more difficult to determine, as resistance is tied to the duration of the seizures as well as the etiology, but about onethird to one-half of patients in status epilepticus will not respond to the first lines of treatment (2, 3).
