ABSTRACT

Hyperglycaemia has a significant effect on nerve function and structure. Although the earliest manifestations may be detected only by electrophysiological studies, nerve function may become so severely disordered that neuropathic diabetic foot disease develops or sudden death occurs due to autonomic neuropathy. The importance of diabetic neuropathy is related, therefore, to the increase in morbidity and mortality it produces. Regular screening and early detection of neuropathy are imperative for the prevention of serious consequences.
