ABSTRACT
Colorectal carcinoma is the third commonest cancer in men (after lung and prostate) and women (after breast and lung), with a lifetime risk of developing the disease of 5%. Most commonly affected is the distal colon; the rectum in one-third and the sigmoid colon in over one-quarter of cases. In 5% of cases there are multiple tumours (so-called synchronous lesions).
