Parenchymal liver disease may present as one of a number of clinical syndromes, and is caused by a range of different pathologies.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis is often, but not always, caused by viruses. Features include jaundice (accumulation of bilirubin in the blood, the skin and sclera of the eyes), pruritus (itching from accumulation of bile salts), pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, lethargy, loss of appetite and weight loss.
