ABSTRACT
This chapter is divided into sections on renal failure, urinary tract calculi (stones), renal neoplasms (tumours) and dental aspects of renal disease.
Renal failure
Loss of renal function results in a reduced glomerular filtration rate or GFR (renal failure) and may be caused by:
• pre-renal conditions such as renal hypoperfusion in severe shock or haemorrhage • intrinsic renal disease such as trauma, disease or drug damage • post-renal disorders such as obstruction of renal outflow by calculi, prostatic
hypertrophy or tumour.
