ABSTRACT
Trauma is the commonest cause of death in 1-40 year olds in the UK. The distribution of trauma-related deaths is trimodal:
• 50% are ‘immediate’ (within seconds-minutes) and are due to primary central nervous system (CNS) injury or vascular lesions such as brainstem lacerations and aortic/large blood vessel lacerations.
