ABSTRACT

The present territory of the Czech Republic consists of two parts, Bohemia and Moravia which were formerly called the Crown Lands of Bohemia and which had fallen under the rule of the House of Austria in 1620. This influenced all development in the country. The German language was used in all official documents and also in research. Only when the independent Czechoslovakia was formed in 1918 did Czech or Slovak become used in all documents. Czechoslovakia then became separated into two countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993.
