ABSTRACT

The deployment of technologies to capture, transport, and store CO2 (CCS) has considerable potential for positively affecting the global situation economically, socially, and environmentally. To realize the benefi ts from large-scale international deployment of CCS, it must be implemented thoughtfully and strategically. Furthermore, the costs and benefi ts of CCS must be addressed logically to allow comparison with realistic alternatives. The current chapter discusses the impact of CCS on global and local environments, societies, and economies, and highlights key areas where CCS performance can be evaluated to encourage risk assessment, maximize benefi ts, and promote communication among the various stakeholders.
