ABSTRACT
Analyzing response of laterally loaded piles and pile groups so far has generally been recourse to numerical approaches (Poulos 1971; Banerjee and Davies 1978; Randolph 1981b; Chow 1987). These approaches are more rigorous, but their practical applications are often limited to small pile groups (Guo 1997), and their accuracy is difficult to justify without analytical solutions (Guo 2010). Approaches using an empirical load transfer model (Hetenyi 1946; Matlock and Reese 1960)and a two-parameter model (Sun 1994) have been proposed by modeling pile-soil interaction using a series of independent elastic springs along the shaft.
