ABSTRACT

Genome scanning by 2D DNA typing is applicable in the following areas: (1) classification, diagnosis and genetic monitoring of microorganisms; (2) mapping of genetic traits (including human disease genes) by linkage or association analysis; (3) the analysis of genomic instability in tumour progression and during ageing; (4) measuring mutation rates at various genomic sites. Eventually such studies will identify particular genomic regions as spot variants in a 2D spot pattern. By matching with a computer database or, alternatively, by direct isolation of the DNA fragment corresponding to the spot of interest information on the particular region can be obtained.
