ABSTRACT

It has become standard terminology in fish farming to speak of nursery stages for fish leaving the hatchery, weighing anything from a few hundred milligrams to several grams, and to reserve the term ‘on growing’ (or ‘grow out’) for fish of over 5-10 g (or even 50 g) in weight. Sometimes the nursery stage finishes at a particular stage of the fish’s life cycle (transfer of salmonids from fresh water to sea water, transfer of marine fish from tanks to cages) rather than at a fixed weight; many variations are possible.
