ABSTRACT

This chapter concentrates upon the nature of the syndrome of computer dependency, and deals with the investigations carried out to discover the computing activities undertaken by the people who considered themselves to be dependent upon computers, the Dependents. Comparisons are made between their responses and those of the control group of non-dependent computer owners, the Owners. The aim was to determine if the computing activities of the Dependents were in any way unique and different from those of the Owners. Although it was anticipated that there would be differences in the time spent and frequency in the use of the computer it was not known whether their activities would also differ qualitatively.
