Evaluation of the new hypertensive patient

All patients with newly discovered hypertension should have a basic work-up of: an adequate history (Table 5); a directed physical examination (Table 6); and limited laboratory testing (Table 7).

If there are features suggestive of a secondary (identifiable) cause of hypertension from this basic evaluation, an initial work-up may be performed by the primary physician (Table 8).
