ABSTRACT
The main goal of cancer treatment is to cure patients. The ideal treatment is one that achieves a cure with preservation of normal function. Radiation-based treatment protocols now make it possible to offer this hope of cure with preservation to patients who present small as well as locally advanced epidermoid carcinomas of the anal canal. Over a few decades, surgical treatment has given way to conservative treatment as standard treatment in most cases.
