ABSTRACT

Gynecologic surgeons have been using in vivo mapping techniques to study the lymphatic system of the female genital tract for years. Eduard Eichner1-3 was the first gynecologist to systematically use lymphatic mapping to study both the external and internal female genitalia. He described the complex drainage of the midline structures of the cervix and uterine fundus using the dye Sky Blue. Unfortunately, he used subcutaneous injections of the dye to study the vulva, drawing the incorrect conclusion that vulvar lymphatics drain directly to the pelvis.
