There are no data from general practice indicating how frequently patients present with weakness. In neurological outpatient practice, weakness figures is a feature among the complaints of the 26.5 per cent of patients who do not have a specific diagnosis, and accounts for about 5 per cent of that total.4 Usually, however, the basis of a complaint of weakness is discovered.
