ABSTRACT
Several excellent popular Earth science books published recently outline the main events in Earth history and highlight the major catastrophes which have helped to shape our ecosystem. Their general message needs emphasising: although gradual “everyday” processes are the norm, we need to be more aware of the unusual or “catastrophic” events. There are several reasons for this.
