THYROID GLAND While thyroid nodules are common, thyroid cancer is uncommon, accounting for approximately 1.5% of all malignancy and 0. 5% of all cancer deaths. Of the large number of thyroid nodules occurring annually (15 million in the USA) only about 5% prove to be malignant.1
