ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION There can be little doubt that the patient with metastatic disease poses one of the most challenging problems for the oncologist. It has been estimated that approximately 30% of all newly diagnosed cancer patients will have detectable metastases at the time of first diagnosis, and 60-70% of patients will develop metastatic disease at some time prior to death.
