ABSTRACT

ORGANIZATION OF MUCOSAL SURFACES Mucosal surfaces of the respiratory, digestive and urogenital tracts are covered by epithelia which constitute an efficient physical barrier that protects the host from environmental pathogens. A controlled transepithelial transport of antigens or microorganisms must occur, however, in order to trigger immune responses or unresponsiveness (tolerance) necessary for the protection and integrity of mucosal surfaces.
