ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4 we discussed recognizing lithology on black/white and color images. Here we look at mapping rock types and surface materials using characteristics of their reflectance curves. Multispectral instruments offer the possibility of automated mineral mapping: one flies over an area, records the reflectance spectra of every object on the ground, and matches the spectral curves to those in a reference library to determine the composition of the surface.
