ABSTRACT
This text has pictorially demonstrated the extensive scientific fund of knowledge regarding hair. The ability to unlock the chemistry of the hair fiber through information borrowed from the textile industry has led to the development of techniques to permanently dye and curl the hair shaft. The creativity of the salon stylist has led to novel ways to cut, comb, and brush the hair into fashion statements of the moment. The ingenuity of the cosmetic chemist has provided new polymers and hair fixatives that can defy gravity and create a multitude of hairstyles for straight, wavy, curly, and kinky hair. All of these techniques provide additional outlets for personal expression through the appearance of scalp hair.
