Calcium metabolism Over 99% of body calcium is in bones. Plasma calcium is distributed equally in bound and unbound forms. It is actively absorbed from the duodenum by an ATP-dependent process regulated by active vitamin D, and is passively absorbed in the jejunum. Ninety-eight percent is reabsorbed in the proximal tubule of the kidney.
