ABSTRACT

The liver is the abdominal organ most commonly injured following both blunt and penetrating trauma. The type and severity of liver injuries vary greatly and many different approaches to their treatment have been described. While the majority of liver injuries may prove to be relatively minor and inconsequential, and it is now clear that even patients with severe liver trauma do not necessarily require operative intervention, other patients with hepatic trauma present the ultimate surgical challenge to even the most experienced trauma or hepatobiliary surgeon. Not surprisingly, a wide spectrum of outcomes has been reported, with the issue further complicated by the consequences of other organ injuries.
