ABSTRACT

Introduction Persistent itching and scratching can result in thickening of genital skin with accentuation of skin markings. This is called lichen simpler chronicus. Its aetiology is unknown, although in many patients a personal or family history of atopy can be elicited, Use of local irritants, contact allergy and psychological factors may all play a role in a selfperpetuating itch-scratch cycle. It generally occurs on accessible areas of genital skin, especially the labia majora in women and the scrotum in men. The perianal region is another commonly affected site.
