ABSTRACT

LGV is rare in the West, although since 2003 the number of diagnoses has increased significantly, albeit to low levels (about 30 cases in the UK in 2004). Most of the recent cases in Western Europe have occurred in HIV-positive men who have had anal sex with multiple male partners. LGV is still relatively common in parts of southern and eastern Africa, South East Asia, South America and the Caribbean. Its exact prevalence is hard to measure because it is hard to diagnose, although it is thought to cause about 5% of genital ulcers in India.
