ABSTRACT

Rather confusingly, pediculosis pubis is not caused by a louse of the Pediculosis genus but by Phthirus pubis. It infests parts of the body covered with coarse hair such as the armpits and anogenital region, the latter being the most commonly infested site. The lice can also be found on the beard and moustache and sometimes the eyelids. Infestation of scalp hair is occasionally reported, particularly in those with long hair, although this is unusual. Infestation of the eyebrows and lashes is more common in children.
