ABSTRACT
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a common, serious and yet poorly understood condition. It is characterized by inflammation of some or all of the following sites: the endometrium, salpinges (fallopian tubes), ovaries and peritoneum (thus leading to periappendicitis and perihepatitis). However, the term PID is only used if the infection ascended through the cervix.
