ABSTRACT

Trichomoniasis is caused by Trichomonas vaginalis (TV); a flagellated protozoan. In women it is found in the vagina, urethra and paraurethral glands. In men, infection usually involves the urethra.

It is a common infection with an estimated 150-200 million cases globally each year. However, in the UK it is relatively uncommon with 6435 cases reported by English GUM clinics in 2003.
