The implant route remains useful. Applying the lessons from the media and legal saga which led to withdrawal of Norplant, it is clear that good prior counselling is crucial. Explain the likely changes to the bleeding pattern and the possibility of ‘hormonal’ side effects (see below). This discussion should be backed by a good (e.g. FPA) leaflet and well-documented.
