ABSTRACT

The use of large doses of oestrogen is outmoded because of severe nausea and vomiting. Apart from mifepristone, still unavailable for this use, three methods have now been shown to be effective: the insertion of a copper IUD, the combined oral emergency contraceptive (COEC) marketed as Schering PC4 and, most recently, the LNG-containing progestogen-only emergency contraceptive (POEC) (Table 10). Marketed as Levonelle 2, POEC has effectively made COEC of largely historical interest only.
