ABSTRACT

Traumatic introduction of wood splinters under the fingernails is a common and painful condition. Forceps extraction of subungual splinters is often difficult when the splinter is completely buried under the nail, and subungual splinters may provide a nidus for fungal or bacterial infection if not promptly removed (1-3). Therefore, in most cases, the removal of subungual wood splinters is prudent (1-3). Herein we review the techniques for direct forceps extraction of subungual wood splinters emphasizing two nail conserving techniques.
