ABSTRACT
Bioluminescence can be defined as the production of visible light through a chemical reaction occurring within a living organism. This important natural phenomenon is employed by many creatures for purposes of defense, mating, concealment, and the recycling of nutrients [1]. Hydrozoan coelenterates, a class of bioluminescent organisms, produce their luminescence through the presence of proteins known as Ca2+-binding photoproteins [2].
