ABSTRACT

Pancreatic surgical procedures range from enucleation of solitary small peripheral subcapsular tumors to segmental or total pancreatectomy. Accurate localization and protection of the pancreatic and biliary ducts in enucleations and segmental resections are the keys to successful outcome. Patients undergoing distal pancreatectomies should have vaccinations against pneumococcal andmeningococcal infections, antibiotic prophylaxis, and cleansing of the colon prior to surgery. Open pancreatic surgery is performed throughmidline or subcostal incisions.
