ABSTRACT

Most of the Central Asian region is located in areas that feed into the Aral Sea, Balkhash, Issyk-Kul and Karakul lakes basins. The region is part of the Eurasian continent and is located near the northern border of the subtropical zone. It is characterized by a continental climate, uneven distribution of atmospheric precipitation and a peculiar hydrological cycle which is greatly affected by wind movement fluctuations. Most water resources originate in mountainous regions and are concentrated in transboundary rivers whose waters are jointly used by the Central Asian states.
