ABSTRACT

A new composite pile system was developed with the aim of reducing cost and construction period. It is common in Japan to utilize consecutive deep mixing (soil cement) columns for earth retaining walls referred to as Soil Mixing Wall (SMW). These soil cement columns can be converted into composite piles by inserting Hbeams forming the core of the columns so that tentative earth retaining walls become composite piles forming part of the permanent structure. The conventional machines for SMW can be readily utilized for placement of composite piles with minimal additional time.
