ABSTRACT
Saturated deposits of low permeability soils, when loaded by a surcharge (i.e. construction of an embankment on saturated clay), undergo settlements occurring over a long period of time. This phenomenon is called consolidation and it was extensively studied by Terzaghi in 1914 by means of a simple piston-spring-water model (Fig. 5.1).
