ABSTRACT
Congestive heart failure is a common clinical syndrome and is a major cause of disability in the elderly. Quality of life and functional capacity are often markedly affected and mortality is high. Hospital admissions are frequent and often prolonged, particularly in the elderly. Management of heart failure accounts for 1-2% of the total health budget in Western countries, with most of these costs being associated with hospital care.
