ABSTRACT
Heart failure is a disease of the elderly and an ever-increasing problem. With increasing longevity in developed countries, more people are living to a greater age, with the potential to develop heart failure, usually with some associated comorbidity. Hospital admissions for heart failure, whilst now shorter in duration, appear to be increasing in frequency (Table 18.1). Thus management costs, which are closely related to hospital care, remain high.
