ABSTRACT

The problem of fugitive pollutants arising from the extensive use of indoor building materials in air-conditioned buildings in Taiwan directly affects the indoor air quality. According to the standard method of ISO 16000, performance comparison study conducted the building material fugitive and absorption experiments with micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)-Based Formaldehyde Gas Sensor by testing with the building materials environmental chamber. The concentrations of indoor formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOC) are relatively high in Taiwan due to warmhumid climate, emission of chemical substances from interior building materials and poor ventilation. According to the survey, indoor formaldehyde and VOCs concentrations are relatively high in Taiwan due to the hot and humid climate, emission of chemical substances in interior building materials, and lack ventilation, thus causing high health risk hazards. The methods of detection for formaldehyde gas may be divided into three main categories: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, optical detection devices, and MEMS based gas sensors.
