ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The Crucified Christ of Bornos (Cádiz) is made according to the technique of Mexican imagery of the first half of the sixteenth century. The aim of this study was to characterize the different materials of biological origin that comprise both sculpture and the loincloth (codex), mainly corn stalk pulp, amate paper and wood, non-traditional supports in the Andalusian imagery. In order to study the different types of cellulosic fibers and wood, they were analyzed depending on their morphological characteristics. A study of polychrome was also performed. The analytical techniques employed were optical microscopy by reflection and transmission polarized light and scanning electron microscope in combination with EDX (Energy Dispersive X Ray spectroscopy). Regarding to biodeterioration, the support was very degraded. The main alteration detected was a severe attack of xylophagous insects caused by anobiids beetles.
