ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Television news still ranks among the most watched TV programmes. Slovak nationwide television channels synchronized their times of broadcasting, as well as the length of the main news programmes. They compete for viewers not only by setting the content of the main daily events and by including the input of interesting editors’ and viewers, but also by the form of processing the topics. Apart from the informational function, the entertainment function of the news broadcasting too rises in prominence. Emotion and story are becoming dominant means of attracting and maintaining attention, as well as communicating information. In this paper the author presents how these two functions-informational and entertainment-blend in news reporting, and how are the emotions of respondents and recipients are used in news production. The author arrives at the results based on qualitative content analysis of television communicants-main news programmes on the television channels RTVS, TV Markíza and TV JOJ in the span of three months (January, April, June 2014).
