ABSTRACT
Dikes play an essential role in flood protection in deltaic areas such as the Netherlands. The mechanism piping is a major cause of dike failures and a main contributor to the probability of failure of dikes due to the large, mostly geotechnical, uncertainties (Kanning 2012 and Schweckendiek 2014).
