ABSTRACT

In addition to the three main machinery alternatives, a fourth alternative is assumed to be a Dual Fuel ready machinery system, where the ship is built to use traditional fuel initially, but some LNG system investments are made to lower the costs of a possible future retrofitting to gas mode. This can for example be a good alternative in situations where LNG bunkering will not likely be available in the trade route of the vessel for another few years. The level of readiness of the ship can vary but, as an example, Dual Fuel engines are installed initially and a plan for later installation of remaining necessary equipment is made. In particular, the expensive and space demanding LNG tanks are not installed initially, but their future locations are planned and the general arrangement is prepared accordingly.
