ABSTRACT

According to the latest data released by EIA, coal consumption in China has had an increasing trend for the past decade (Fig. 1). China is now the largest global producer and consumer of coal. It accounts for about 47% of global coal consumption-almost as much as the rest of the world combined (EIA, 2013). Due to an increase in electricity generation, coal demand in China has averaged 9% growth per year from 2000 to 2010; more than double the global growth rate of 4% and significantly higher than global growth excluding China, which averaged only 1%.
