ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: After some introductory comments on unavoidable biological changes as a consequence of advanced age, the role of the human operator in the control loop “work” is addressed, whereby it may not be faded out that the human performance potential is substantially impacted by age. The thereupon following survey on age-related changes from an ergonomics point of view is limited to rough knowledge on physical and sensorimotor performance, the course of aging on the vision and the hearing and on central nervous and cognitive age-related changes. The not always pleasant facts that will emerge are garnished with aphorisms and qualifying “wisdoms on age”. The latter convey the main ideas on the “art of aging”.
