ABSTRACT
This is how the first cities emerge, cities in which earth is the main material, the result of skilled labor coming from the south. In a rural setting and with a nomadic population, the Maâlem have been the ones who have managed and accomplished the construction of ksour along this whole region. Some groups that stand out are the Tafilalt Maâlems, considered great masters builders, who are credited with building the ksour in the Guir, Ziz, Rheris and Drâa valleys (Laoust 1932).
