ABSTRACT

The word Granja (Farmhouse) normally refers to a set of buildings for agricultural uses, including housing for the owner, the managers and the settlers, stables, barns, etc. Buildings are generally grouped around a courtyard, sometimes surrounded by a fortified wall. The meaning of alquería and granja is virtually the same, but we prefer to keep the two terms in order to differentiate Muslim and Christian phase. The site of Sinyent, called “La Granja”, remained in the possession of the monastery of Valldigna until the confiscation of 1837, when it was sold by the State to an individual.
